Monthly Theme Messages (Commodities)
- The right health products can save millions of lives, but only when access is ensured for all. In 2012, the UN Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children endorsed 13 priority MNH commodities that could prevent up to 6 million deaths in five years4, yet uptake – and the implementation of additional WHO-recommended products since then – remains variable across countries.
- Quality matters as much as availability. Ensuring quality across key components of the product pathway – such as manufacturing, regulation, and post-market surveillance – is essential, alongside other drivers that support consistent and reliable access.
- Procurement and supply chain breakdowns remain urgent challenges. Persistent stock-outs compromise availability of lifesaving MNH products and lead to high out-of-pocket costs for mothers and families.
- Defragmentation is needed to drive progress. A shared vision and strong collaboration across key entities – such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, and procurement agencies – are essential to move from isolated actions to coordinated results.
- Equity must guide action. Breaking down the barriers so lifesaving MNH products reach every woman and every newborn, everywhere.
